The Bordeaux region of France has been growing its vines since the 3rd century. Situated along the banks of the Garrone River, it is part of the Gironde estuary, and receives the perfect climatic conditions for a great grape.
And it's true, the vines of Bordeaux have seen great transitions of powerful people pass by.
Aristotle defined the Bordeaux wines as "classified amoung the great universals."
Aquitaine was so fond of his vines that he was often seen early in the morning, fondling the fruits of his labors. Personifying the ageless proverb: "the shadow of a good master, makes the vine grow much faster."
It was this uncaste care, that gave Bordeaux the power of her fine wine. While creating a social structure so unique, that Mayor was beside mower, and Baron beside Baker, when the grapes were in the vat.
By 1555, the Mayor of Bordeaux visited the French Court with 20 tonneaux (4 hogsheads) of wine for presentation to the noblemen, in an effort to gain their trade. By 1559, the noblemen were coming to the Bordeaux region.
The first bottles of Bordeaux wine were presented in 1681, to the Muscovite Ambassador. The following century, the first industrial glass works gave birth to the Bordeaux fine wine business, which was to produce the first classification by parishes, and then by Chateaux or estates.
Between 1763 and 1789, a time called "Trade with the Isles", the Bordeaux region was the greatest distribution centre for colonial goods in all Europe, and monopolized a quarter of France's foreign trade. It was at this time that the Bordeaux wines became "France Personified"
Long has the wine of Bordeaux been the chosen wine of Kings and Queens. Thus, spurring the control measures that were instituted to regulate and maintain the true quality of the wine. Bringing on the "first growth", "second growth", etc., to define the specific regions where the wine was grown.
Example: In the Bordeaux we have the Medoc region of red wines that were a great growth of the 1855 classification.
The first growths are Chateau Lafite-Rothchild, Pauillac; Chateau Margaux, Marguax; Chateau Latour, Pauillac; and Chateau Mouton-Rothchild, Pauillac.
There are no finer, more thoroughbred, more intellectualized wines than the Medoc. With the Pauillac wines being the most masterful. This nobility proceeds from their bouquet and aroma which are unique among the great French wines. Also noted that it can hold its peak of perfection for a very long time.
